30 straightforward content ideas

Idea 1 – share a picture and description of where you do your work

Why do people LOVE social media? Because it is social at it’s core. People are interested in people, they buy from people, and they want to engage with people.

The main “must haves” for content that you are posting on any platform are:

  1. Be yourself
  2. Offer value

Beyond this, everything else is just a stylistic choice.

The idea of sharing a photo and description of where you do your work is one that can be repeated a few times a year – reflecting the different patterns / clients that you go through, or even how it looks and feels different in different seasons. This isn’t my desk – it’s a stock image to make a point – but I do work in quite a messy way.

Why would this work as a post?

Followers like the feeling that they are getting a “behind the scenes” look at what makes you, you. The likely responses to the photo of a messy desk above are:

a) Oh, cool! I’m messy too, glad you shared this!

b) Man you are such a mess, I could never work like that.

In either case, you have started a conversation that people care about and can engage with. Are you likely to make a quick and immediate sale? Course not – but that’s not the point. The vast majority (around 70%) of the buying decision has been made by the time a customer actually enquires – so the more you can show that you are a real, honest human being, the closer you bring a customer to being ready to commit to a purchase.

Some will never buy from you, of course… but they will know more about you and be more likely to think of you when someone else they know mentions a service that you provide.

So, what do I do?

Easy as pie – although pie isn’t that easy… so EASIER than pie:

  1. Take the photo – can be a selfie with you in it too, if you like
  2. [Optional] Drop it into a nice graphic using something like Canva to tart it up a bit
  3. Post it with a caption that says something like, “Here’s my desk for today… Is it like yours?” and then add a few of your essentials, like a coaster you wouldn’t be without, or a special keyboard that you need… Generally, the quirkier the better!
  4. Get over your fear – click post, and respond to comments with what you’d say in a real conversation in real life.
