Funny Business 3 – 21st Sept 2023

I frikkin’ love making people laugh… Thursday night was such a great networking event, meaning I could say things I think are damn hilarious to a room full of good people from the Exeter business community, and all for the Amber Foundation – a charity I have literally walked on hot coals for in the past. We raise over £3,100 for these guys, who provide residential centres across the UK, with one site in Devon, for young people aged 18-30 who need a little helping hand to transform their lives.

Hosted by the winning team at The Terrace, Exeter, we kicked it all off by opening the doors at 6.30pm and letting the business folk of Devon get a nibble, a tipple and a mingle. At 8pm, a former resident of Amber, Stewart Lee, stood up and explained how the charity literally saved his life several years ago, helping him get clean and back onto a good track. He is now a published author, speaker, and runs his own accountancy business.

The laughing bit

I opened up the evening with my own set, mentioning a few key facts:

  • I once performed a DNA swab on my wife to ensure that my children were at least 51% Welsh,
  • There are more Rabbit Vibrator sex toys in the UK than there are real rabbits… Demand being so high they now sell them on a first-come first-served basis,
  • Josh Butler is my favourite real-life version of a Guess Who character.

Sandi Smith then did another remarkable set, some members of the audience laughing until the tears rolled down their thighs. A short pause for more booze, raffle tickets and mingling, and general merriment.

The second half kicked off with a song I wrote about some of the legends of the Exeter networking scene. A little bit of audience participation, a first-ever set by Shahin, and Welsh Dave ran onto the stage with his Deliveroo kit and made us all HOWL with laughter for a good half an hour.

DO NOT miss the next one – a chance to meet over 100 people, laugh a LOT, get a good night out, and do good for charity.
